Data on WEEE collection: why is the trend downward?

Italy, like many other countries, faces a growing challenge related to the management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). This waste, which includes a wide range of products from large and small household appliances to computer devices and audio/video equipment, is one of the fastest growing waste categories globally.

However, despite growing awareness regarding the importance of recycling and proper disposal of WEEE, the most recent data indicate a downward trend in the collection of this waste in Italy, with a 3.1 percent decrease from previous years.

The impact of the 2021 TV bonus

One of the main causes of this decline has been identified as theTV post-bonus effect introduced in 2021. This incentive, designed to promote the purchase of next-generation TVs, led to a substantial increase in TV sales, but had as a side effect a drastic reduction in the collection rate of TVs and monitors sent for recycling, which dropped by 32.9 percent.

This situation highlights a critical aspect of the WEEE management: the effectiveness of policies incentivizing technological renewal must be balanced with effective strategies for collecting and recycling discarded products.

The increase in collection of the other groupings.

Despite the significant decline in TV and monitor collection, an increase in collection was observed for other WEEE groupings. This positive figure shows that there is still room for improvement and areas where recycling policies are achieving satisfactory results.

However, the increase recorded was not enough to offset the decline in the R3 category (TVs and monitors), underscoring the need for targeted interventions for these types of products.
