The eco-contribution is an environmental contribution required by European and national legislation as part of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Its purpose is to finance all activities necessary for the management of waste generated by products placed on the market: from collection to treatment, from recycling to—when necessary—final disposal.
The law stipulates that producers, through collective or individual systems, must bear the costs of the proper management of waste derived from their products. For this reason, they pay an eco-contribution to the relevant consortium, in proportion to the quantities placed on the national market.
With regard to Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE), the eco-contribution has been in place since the launch of the EPR system (Legislative Decree 151/2005, now replaced by Legislative Decree 49/2014). It can be applied in two ways:
Visible eco-contribution: expressed in euros/unit and indicated separately on invoices. It must also be shown in the price to the end consumer.
Internalized eco-contribution: included in the product's sale price and not visible on invoices to end users.
