Bar under the trash can symbol: what does it mean?

Table of Contents

When we buy an electrical or electronic appliance, we often find a symbol on it consisting of a small wheeled trash can crossed out with an "X."

Good: this is the symbol for separate collection of EEE (electrical and electronic equipment), better known as "WEEE," once it has become waste.

But what is the meaning of the horizontal bar that, in many cases, accompanies that symbol?

The technical meaning

According to Directive 2012/19/EU and its national transposition with Legislative Decree No. 49 of March 14, 2014 (in particular Annex IX), all equipment placed on the market after August 13, 2005, must bear:

  • the symbol of the crossed-out wheeled bin;
  • a solid horizontal bar, placed under the bin, without any writing or wording. The presence of the bar is not an insignificant graphic detail: it communicates that the appliance is subject to a different disposal regime than general urban waste.

Why it is important

Since many components of EEE contain valuable materials and/or potentially polluting substances (such as mercury, lead, and cadmium), separate collection allows:

  • the prevention of toxic substances from being released into the environment
  • the recovery and recycling of raw materials, in order to reduce the impact of extraction
  • compliance with regulatory obligations for manufacturers, distributors, and end users

Implications for companies and users

For domestic users: if you find the symbol with a crossed-out wheelie bin (and a bar), then the appliance must not be disposed of with unsorted municipal waste. It must be taken to a designated collection point (WEEE collection centers, retailers offering collection services, etc.).

For businesses (B2B), the responsibilities are greater: the collection of professional WEEE must be managed in a certified manner by using authorized operators, ensuring that personal data is removed and that batteries and accumulators are properly separated before treatment.

In summary

The crossed-out wheelie bin symbol means: "Warning! This equipment must be treated as special waste." The horizontal bar under the bin indicates that the product was placed on the market after August 13, 2005, making it subject to the WEEE regime. Understanding and correctly applying this distinction is not only a regulatory requirement, but also a concrete act of environmental responsibility.
